I'm going to tell you a secret about the 🍷⁠

Not all are made the same! Although the elements and processes are similar, each winery has its rules, its forms and, in many cases, innovates in formats, techniques, and more.⁠

Today I want to tell you about my experience visiting Bodega Susana Balbo @susanabalbowines in Mendoza, Argentina. In the photos, you will find round and oval fermentation vessels, cement eggs, barrels, and tanks of various sizes, materials, and shapes. Why? ⁠

Because in the search for innovation, new production processes, and minimal intervention all these formats can make a difference. In this case, we are talking about the first Argentine winemaker, Susana Balbo, who has always stood out for taking risks to try. During my visit, I tasted the Susana Balbo Brioso, the Ben Marco Expressive, the Susana Balbo White Blend, and the Susana Balbo Rosé, all unique in their style.⁠

But back to the forms. A smaller tank allows you to do micro vinifications and experiments in addition to having more control over the process, a cement egg avoids you doing pump-overs and there is less intervention, a larger barrel means that the wood has less prominence. I could continue describing options that would make this post very long 🙂 but basically a different decision, a different result.⁠
